Spells, Ancestors, and Place

Tahoe Gallery, Incline Village, NV 2023

This was a group show where I was exploring how to bring a sense of place to another location. I was experimenting with ways to create “land art” remotely so it was visiting people instead of traditional land art where it is fixed and the people must make the pilgrimage. To do so I sourced native wood from around my studio in the Pacific Northwest and recorded the sounds of my heartbeat as well as the sounds derived from the seismograph I built in my garage below my studio. I constructed 2′ x 4′ speakers out of lay in acoustic tile to flood the space with those two sounds. Through headphones seemingly attached to tree stumps I had spells, or enchantments playing on loop that I wrote and recorded in the forest just steps from my studio.
